Can you put essential oils in a humidifier?

Disclosure: Humid Home helps you match replacement humidifier filters. Some Shop links go to retail product pages, and we may earn from purchases when those programs apply. This is general guidance drawn from manufacturer manuals and EPA material.

This page covers what humidifier makers allow and what they say oil can do to the unit.

The short answer

Check your model’s manual, because most say no. Of four Honeywell cool-mist manuals quoted below, three say not to put essential oils in the water tank. Several of those same models have a small essential oil tray or pad instead, where the oil sits apart from the water. One model, the Honeywell HUL530 Ultra Glow, is built to take oil in the tank. So the model matters more than the general rule.

What the manuals say

  • HUL525 / HUL545 (ultrasonic cool mist): “DO NOT add any essential oils or medications (e.g. Vicks VapoSteam®) into the Base Water Reservoir or Water Tank. Doing so could damage the humidifier and void the warranty.” The same manual has an Essential Oil Tray and says, “This is not a diffuser – the oil does not come in contact with water and is passively evaporated into the air.”
  • HUL900 series (Reflection cool mist): the fill step says, “DO NOT ADD ESSENTIAL OILS, MEDICATIONS, OR INHALANT LIQUIDS, such as Vicks VapoSteam, to the Tank. Doing so could cause damage to the humidifier and void the warranty.” It also has an oil tray: a few drops go on the pad, not in the water.
  • HUL430 (cool mist): “DO NOT add any medications, inhalants, scented products or essential oils into the Base, Water Reservoir or Water Tank.” Its Essential Oil Tray section warns that additives in the tank “can have adverse effects on the humidifier and void the warranty.”
  • The exception, HUL530 Ultra Glow: this manual offers two ways to use oil: added “directly to the water in the Tank” or on the tray. It says the tank and reservoir “are made with special materials that will not be damaged by oils,” and warns to add “only essential oils” to the water, since anything else can harm the unit and void the warranty. That’s one model’s design. Don’t carry it over to a different humidifier.

If your humidifier isn’t one of these, look in its manual for a section called something like “essential oil,” “aroma” or “scent.” No mention at all? Leave the tank to water only and ask the maker.

Why makers say no

The manuals give two reasons: oil or other additives in the tank could damage the humidifier, and doing it can void the warranty. They don’t explain the damage in more detail. If keeping the warranty matters to you, that alone settles it for any model whose manual says no.

Already added oil?

  1. Turn off and unplug the humidifier.
  2. Empty the tank and the base completely. Don’t keep running that water.
  3. Clean it the way your manual says. Honeywell’s manuals split cleaning into scale removal (undiluted white vinegar, a soak, then rinse until the smell is gone) and a separate disinfecting step, and say never to submerge the base. If you have a wick-style model, take the wick out first. See how to clean a humidifier for the full routine.
  4. Rinse thoroughly. EPA says to rinse the tank with several changes of water after any cleaner so it isn’t blown into the room.
  5. Still smells of oil? None of the manuals above give a step for getting rid of an oil smell. If it lingers after a full clean, contact the maker’s consumer support and name your model. They can say whether any part, such as the tank or wick, should be replaced.

Medicated inhalants

The Honeywell cool-mist manuals above name Vicks VapoSteam as something not to put in the tank, along with “medications” and “inhalant liquids.” The HUL530 manual says no medication anywhere in the unit “except as specified by this manual.” Some steam or warm-mist humidifiers are designed differently, so follow the manual for your model. If it doesn’t name a place for an inhalant, don’t add one.

Quick checklist

  • Find your model number and read the manual’s oil or scent section
  • Manual says no oils in the tank: use the oil tray or pad if there is one, or skip scent
  • Manual says oils are OK in the tank (like the HUL530): add only what it allows
  • Added oil by mistake: unplug, empty, clean per the manual, rinse well
  • Normal daily care either way: empty, wipe dry, refill (distilled vs tap water)
  • Right wick on hand (Find my filter)
