Should you use distilled or tap water in a humidifier?

What EPA says about minerals in the mist

EPA’s “Use and Care of Home Humidifiers” recommends water with low mineral content, such as distilled water, to reduce scale buildup and to reduce minerals released into the air. Researchers have documented that ultrasonic and impeller (“cool mist”) humidifiers are efficient at dispersing minerals from tap water; some users also notice white dust on surfaces.

EPA’s main reason to prefer low-mineral water is scale: mineral crust can become a place where microorganisms grow. White dust and a preference to minimize mineral exposure are additional reasons EPA lists.

Distilled vs other bottled labels

EPA points to bottled water labeled “distilled.” Distillation is the most effective common method for removing minerals. Water treated by deionization or reverse osmosis still has, on average, more mineral content than distilled. Labels such as “spring,” “artesian,” or “mineral” have not been treated to remove minerals — do not treat those as distilled.

Do evaporative and steam units need distilled water?

EPA notes that steam vaporizer and evaporative humidifiers are not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals. Scale can still form in any tank that holds standing water, so low-mineral water can still help with cleaning even when white dust is less of an issue. Follow your manual.

Care still matters more than the jug label

Whatever water you use: unplug, empty, wipe dry and refill daily; clean portable units about every third day per EPA (your manual may say weekly — the manual wins if it names an interval). Rinse thoroughly after any cleaner so chemicals are not blown into the room. See how to clean a humidifier and how often to replace a filter. White dust details: ultrasonic white dust.

Quick checklist

  • Know your type: ultrasonic / impeller vs evaporative / steam
  • If white dust or heavy scale: switch to distilled (or another low-mineral option your maker allows)
  • Don’t assume “spring” water is low-mineral
  • Daily empty/wipe/refill; clean on schedule
  • Right wick on hand (Find my filter)
