What humidity should your house be when the furnace is on?

Why the furnace dries your air

Cold outdoor air holds very little water. When that air leaks in and the furnace warms it, the amount of water stays the same while the air’s capacity goes up, so relative humidity (RH) drops. The furnace isn’t removing water. It’s warming dry air.

A practical target range (and when to go lower in deep cold)

  • Year-round guide: EPA says to keep indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30–50%.
  • On very cold nights your windows may fog before you reach 30%. If they do, turn it down until they clear. The glass has the final say.

How to measure: a cheap hygrometer beats guessing

EPA notes that a humidity meter is a small, inexpensive instrument. Put one in the main living area, away from the humidifier’s output, and read it at the same time each day. Your throat and the static on the couch are not gauges.

Signs it’s too dry vs. too humid (window condensation is the stop sign)

Humidifier upkeep: water type, cleaning, filter or wick swaps

EPA’s general care guidance for portable humidifiers:

  1. Empty, dry, and refill daily (unplug first).
  2. Clean every third day. Scrub out scale and film, and rinse well if you used a cleaner.
  3. Use low-mineral water, such as distilled, especially in ultrasonic or impeller units. It’s the fix for ultrasonic white dust.
  4. Evaporative units: swap the wick or filter on the maker’s schedule, or sooner if it’s crusted or output falls off. Make sure you have the right part for your model. See HAC-504AW vs HFT600, or use Find my filter.

Console and whole-house units: follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Quick checklist

  • Hygrometer in the main room, read daily
  • Setting between 30% and 50% (EPA’s range)
  • Turn it down when the windows fog, especially on cold nights
  • Tank emptied and refilled daily, cleaned every third day
  • Wick or filter on schedule (Find my filter)
